James A. Herriott Memorial Fund
About James A. Herriott
James A. Herriott was a pioneer and early pillar of the data processing community in San Antonio, Texas, and a recognized leader in the early days of the city’s Data Processing Management Association (DPMA) chapter. He was the Data Processing Manager of Sommer’s Drug Stores, a San Antonio area retail pharmacy chain that operated from 1912 to 1977.
About the fund
The James A. Herriott Memorial San Antonio IT Initiatives Fund is administered by board members of what was the CompTIA AITP San Antonio Chapter. The fund supports IT college and university students in the Central and South Texas region. Its spirit dates to the 1970s, growing out of the DPMA South Texas Computer Expo and subsequent chapter fundraising, and lives on through scholarships and conference and competition attendance grants.
When funding academic scholarships, recipients are full-time students pursuing a degree in information technology as defined by the Foundation’s Board of Regents. Recipients are chosen by the fund’s donor group on the basis of scholastic ability, leadership potential, and financial need; applicants address all three criteria in a formal letter of application.
